INTRODUCTION

You may want to print out this document before starting the installation.  The installation process is discussed in detail within this document and includes the following steps:

  • Installing the Java Runtime Environment (JRE)
  • Installing SAMreport

For simplicity, all file names in the examples reflect installing the software under the default installation directory, also called SAMreport_home. If you select another directory, you will need to adjust the file names accordingly.

Default SAMreport_home Location
C:\Program Files\Macrovision\samreport\version

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

  • SAMreport v3.6 is supported on Windows 2000/XP/2003.
  • SAMreport runs best on systems with at least 128MB of physical memory.  Running with less memory can severely impact performance on large reports.
  • SAMreport was designed for a display setting of 800x600 pixels or greater.  On Windows, check via Start | Settings | Control Panel, click Display, click Settings, and check that the Desktop area is 800x600 or higher.  Click OK and File | Close the Control Panel.
  • You need to have a browser such as Netscape or Internet Explorer installed to view the HTML documentation.  IE 6.0 and Mozilla 1.4 have been tested and approved for use with SAMreport documentation.
  • You must have the Adobe Acrobat Reader installed to view the PDF documentation.  You can download the Acrobat Reader for free from http://www.adobe.com.
  • You can be logged in as any user when installing SAMreport.  However, if you are installing on Windows 2000/XP/2003, Start | Programs will not contain a SAMreport menu item unless you install the software while logged in as an Administrator.  SAMreport can be started from Windows Explorer, and does not require a Start menu item to function properly.
  • The use of an X emulator to display SAMreport on a Windows machine is not recommended. In particular, we have had reports that Hummingbird's Exceed X emulator is not compatible with the version of Java that SAMreport requires.

JRE Requirements

Windows 2000 /XP / 2003

SAMreport has been tested and approved with the Windows JRE 1.4.2_04. Refer to the download URL in the chart that follows.

Before downloading the JRE, please check the following on your operating system:

  • If you would like to know the build level of your operating system, you can find it out via:
Start | Control Panel | System

  • If you already have Java installed, determine the Java version number via MS-DOS Prompt:
    <pathname to Java>\bin\java -version

    I.E., C:\Program Files\JavaSoft\JRE\1.1\bin\jre -version
    or C:\Program Files\j2re1.4.1_01\bin\java -version
OS Windows 98 and NT/2000/XP/2003

INSTALLATION

Installing the Java Runtime Environment

JRE may need to be installed if you do not have a JRE already installed that meets the system requirement or if the SAMreport installation program or runtime cannot use the JRE you currently have on the system. You can obtain the JRE installation program from the link provided in the system requirements section or use one if supplied along with the SAMreport installation program.

  • Install any operating system patches required for the JRE.
  • Run the provided Java installer.
  • Agree to the Java license agreement by selecting Yes when prompted.
  • We recommend you install Java in the default installation location, by clicking Next when prompted.
  • The installation program will check for existing versions of the JRE on your system.  If it finds that you have a different version of the JRE, it will offer you choices for upgrading.

Installing SAMreport

This section explains the process for installing SAMreport as a new installation.

Run the platform-specific SAMreport installer by double-clicking samreport-3_4-i86_n3.exe.
